Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) is a
breakthrough Professional Development program to be used primarily by reading
coaches, literacy specialists, and speech/language professionals to help teachers
increase their effectiveness in reading instruction. It is delivered through
modules and its content is as exceptional and forward-thinking as the author
who created it. LETRS will increase teachers' understanding of how students
learn to read, write and spell; why some children struggle; and how to
implement proven instructional strategies to promote reading success.
With training in LETRS professional developers can provide teachers
with a core understanding of the language structures they are teaching
and help them gain in-depth, useful instructional information that complements
their everyday teaching practices. It is not a replacement for implementation
of core basal reading programs; rather, it is designed to bring deeper insight
and knowledge to reading instruction, provide answers that instructional
materials cannot, and allow teachers to reach, through explicit, scientifically
based methods, student who might otherwise fail.
Open-tuition and privately contracted institutes, taught by certified LETRS
National Trainers, provide the most comprehensive and effective training. LETRS
Institutes provide professional developers with an understanding of the foundation,
content, and procedures of LETRS modules, and learn from a certified LETRS
National Trainer how to train classroom teachers in the implementation of the
program.
