Bully-Proofing Your School is a comprehensive school climate program
designed to create safe and caring school communities by shifting the
power away from bullies and into the hands of the caring majority of
students. The program is available for both elementary and
middle schools.
Bully-Proofing Your School utilizes a team approach to involve administrators, teachers, support staff, students, and the community to change the climate in the school. It is a comprehensive program with five equally important components:
- Staff Training - Teaches staff the facts about the bullying dynamic, how to recognize a bullying situation, and how to intervene.
- Student Instruction - Teaches students the skills to take responsibility for themselves and each other in order to shift the power away from bullies.
- Support for the Victims - Develops skills to avoid victimization and increase assertiveness.
- Parent Support - Develops collaborative techniques to avoid the power struggle.
- Developing the Caring Community - Creates a positive, caring school climate of students and adults supporting each other.
Training
Full-day training workshops are held in Denver, Colorado, in the fall and
spring of each year. Basic Bully-Proofing concepts are taught in the morning,
and the afternoon is devoted to direct training in the classroom curriculum as
well as specific program planning for each school. The workshop is available
to both elementary and middle school personnel, and afternoon sessions are
presented separately for each level. Parents who wish to attend may elect the
parent training workshop during the afternoon session.
The morning session will overview the Bully-Proofing strategies and
concepts. These are applicable to both elementary and middle school.
The afternoon session will cover curriculum application. You may choose an
elementary or middle school session.
The workshop will include materials, demonstrations, strategies, interventions,
curriculum, and time for developing a plan for your school.
On-site trainings are available for schools or school districts. A
team of two trainers comes directly to your school or area for a full
day of individualized training. The trainers will provide masters of handouts
and training aids that can be copied. Books for individualized trainings may
be ordered from Sopris West Educational Services.
